Altitude of Chatakpur is about 7800 feet (2380 meter). Compare this with Darjeeling (6700 feet – 2042 meter) and Tiger Hill (8500 feet or 2590 meter) and you can understand the place is quite high in altitude. Hence Chatakpur can be quite cold. During winter months, snowfall is common. Early morning frozen dew can be quite sleeper unless you are careful. Throughout the year you need to carry heavy woollens. The area being on top of a hill is also quite windy. So you also need to carry wind proofs. It rains heavily during the monsoon months of July to September, but during the other months also occasional shower can be expected anytime, weather changes here by the hour. Humro Home Chatakpur is located at Upper Chatakpur in Sonada area of Darjeeling. This is a home stay in the Senchal forest with grand view of Kanchenjunga and surrounding mountains.
Humro Home Chatakpur is our Home Stay at Chatakpur forest village near Darjeeling. Chatakpur has come into prominance in recent years due to the grand view of surrounding mountains from here including view of Mt. Kanchenjunga. Chatakpur is the hilltop next to famous tiger hill sunrise point. It is a small forest village with less than two dozen huts and its total inhabitants number less than a hundred. This makes Chatakpur one of the most exclusive and secluded tourist destinations of the region.
Our Home Stay here is inside the Senchal wildlife Sanctuary. There are several home stays in the village, the Humro Home Chatakpur is the topmost homestay in the village. Mr. Norbu Sherpa is your host here. The Homestsay was started in 2012 and presently offers 4 rooms for guest accommodation. The location of our homestay is advantageours as you get the best view of the surrounding mountains due to your stay at the top of the hill. Kanchenjunga can be seen from almost every room and corner of this Home Stay.
Guests must note that you will need to walk uphill about 200 meters from the car stand to reach Humro Home Chatakpur. There is a short cut route through which the distance is reduced to about a hundred meters. Elderly and sick visitors must keep this in mind while booking. The path is also not suitable for disabled visitor using wheelchair. You can consider the uphill walk akin to climbing a four story building by stairs and you should be ready for the same.
The main view point of the village located at the top of the hill is less than 100 meters from our Home Stay. This view point offers a 360 degree panoramic view of the hills on a clear day.
Most tourists spend their day walking around the village or enjoying the grand mountain views from here. Just few minutes’ walk will take you inside the forest, you may visit the small lake inside which is worshipped by the locals.
However avoid going deep inside the forest especially during dawn and dusk. There is wildlife in the forest including Himalayan Bear which has a history of attacking human on some occasions.
The best viewing spot is the view point at the top of the village which has a watch tower. With 360 degree view of the surrounding hills. You will end up spending a substantial time here.
Chatakpur being a very small village there is no restaurant in the village, so all our bookings are in AP plan, which means all your meals will be served at our home stay. The basic meal plan food includes bed tea, breakfast, Lunch, evening tea and dinner.
Local food is served with limited choice. Breakfast includes roti sabji or puri bhaji. Lunch includes dal, rice, vegetable and egg. Dinner consists of Roti or rice with Dal, vegetables and chicken, additional food if available will be charged extra on the spot. If you have any special request about food, you need to reconfirm the same in advance. Please note the nearest market is about 45 minutes drive away and option of food in the village is limited. However the food is hygienic and sumptuous.
Since you will be travelling through the forests, you will need permission and pay entry fee. We will organise the same for our guests. Also note the road through the forest may be quite tricky for drivers who are not familiar with the terrain. So we do not recommend self driving. High ground clearance of the vehicle is also a must.
There are three different routes to come here, The most common way to reach Chatakpur is Dilaram – Bagora route. From Bagdogra / NJP drive to Dilaram near Darjeeling (55 kms), from here a steep forested road will take you to Bagora, about 3 kms away. Bagora is an Indian Air force base located on the Old Cart road. The old cart road is the original road to Darjeeling from Siliguri. From Bagora you will travel to Chatakpur via the old cart road. The distance is about 14 kms, but the road is unpaved and full of gravel.
You may also travel from Jorebunglow through the Jorebunglow Chatakpur road. This road reaches Chatakpur just 14 kms away.
The third option is to travel from 3rd mile area on the Darjeeling Kalimpong Peshok road. From 3rd mile forest check post, you will be travelling about 11 kms to reach Chatakpur.
