Host Info

Sundar Singh Rava

Sundarsingh Rava is your host at Humro Home Chilapata. The Rava people are also referred to as Rabha, and are the original inhabitants of the area. They are spread over Assam, Meghalaya and Dooars area of Bengal.

Sundar has been a resident of this forest village since birth and has been an active campaigner for the rights of the forest dwellers. He speaks indigenous Rava language as well as Bengali and Hindi. Sundars wife and father also assist him actively in his small hospitality endeavour. The Rava Homestay started hosting guests here since late 2017 and within a short period has earned its name as a helpful, knowledgeable and amiable host among Homestay guests.

Our Homestay faces the forest which is across a paddy field about 100 meters away. In the evening you can seat comfortably at the wooden Veranda and watch some wildlife that come out of the forest into the open. Peacocks, Boars, Deer are the most common, Rhinos and elephants can also be seen sometimes.

Walk across the field and closer to the forest, accompanied by a local, you can see a small rivulet by the forest side as well as a small pond. There are plenty of birds in the vicinity for the interested. The road behind the Homestay can be taken for a strall for a village walk. Take a drive for about a km to reach Torsha riverbed which is an ideal spot for wild life sighting. Walk in the opposite direction and the Chilapata forest range office is just 250 meters away. There are several shops and local people here for you to mingle with.

Things to See

Apart from enjoying the peace and tranquillity of the area and generally enjoying nature, most tourists love to go for forest safari at Chilapata.

The early morning and afternoon jeep safaris take you deep inside the forest where there is a good likelihood of sighting Elephant, Rhino, Deer, Gaur and other wildlife. The dense forest makes this safari quite enjoyable. Tickets for safari are available at the Chilapata forest check post which is walking distance from the Homestay. The forest jeep safari in Chilapata forest starts from the check post nearby. This is the prime attraction for tourists visiting Chilapata. The “Nal Rajar Garh”, meaning the fort of the Nal King, though in ruins now, can be reached on foot or on Jeep safari. Being a forest area, there are restrictions on activities inside the forests. Walks can be arranged in the village to learn about local culture, or in the nearby Mathura Tea garden. You can also visit the Torsa River Sun Set point which is just 2 kms from our Accommodation.

Getting There

If you are coming from Alipurduar / Coochbehar or Jalpaiguri area, drive through National Highway 27 to reach Sonapur crossing. From here take the North East bound road that will take you to the Chilapata forest check post in about 15 minutes (11 kms). The Humro Home Chilapata is about 300 meters from the forest check post.

If you are travelling from Jaldapara side via National Highway 317, you will first reach Hasimara Gurudwara Crossing where the road bifurcates. The highway goes towards Assam via Alipurduar, whereas the forest road will pass through the length of Chilapata forest to take you to the same Chilapata forest check post mentioned earlier. From Hasimara to Chilapata checkpost is about 17 kms. There is a third road which can be used by people travelling from Buxa area. This road originates from NH 317 near Mendabari Church and reaches our Homestay about 10 kms away. We do not recommend this third route unless you have a driver with some knowledge of the area as there are couple of turns in this route that can be missed quite easily.

Nearby Places

Jaldapara and Buxa forests are both within a driving distance of less than an hour, so is Coochbehar town. So Chilapata can be your base to visit these forests or the Historic Coochbehar palace and the Madan Mohan Temple there. Phuentsholing border town of India and Bhutan can also be reached in a drive time of just over an hour.

Jaldapara Entrance – 33 kms, 50 minutes drive Buxa forest entry gate – 34 kms, 50 minutes drive Coochbehar Palace – 38 kms, 1 hour Phuenthsoling Bhutan Boarder – 42 kms, 1 hours 15 minutes. (Travel time is an approximate value, may differ depending on road condition and traffic)
