Bara Mangwa

Mr. T. B. Moktan is an army veteran's son who takes keen interest in the conservation of local tradition and culture. He used to be a guide in Sandakphu when it was not that well known as a trekking destination to the general tourist. He has now taken up the responsibility of propagating his own village Bara Mungwa as a tourist destination.

He has a good collection of traditional knives (Khukuri), gun and a vintage Jeep. His wife Mrs Kamala also assists him in taking care of the guests. Kamala is a retired school teacher and now their son has also joined them in the running of the homestay.

Activity

1) Day trip to Takdah orchid nursery, tea garden visit, Triveni view point. Return via Teesta bazar. 2)Day trip to Kalimpong with local sightseeing. 3) Day visit to Darjeeling with local sightseeing. 4) River rafting and other river activity

Takdah army cantonment was established in the year 1912 and hence has a historical importance. Darjeeling and Kalimpong are located about 36 KMs and 21 Kms respectively from Bara Mungwa and hence a day trip can be availed. Humro Home Bara Mungwa is suitably located for river activity such as rafting and angling in river Teesta.

Takling monastery is an old Buddhist monastery which was built in the year 1915-17 by a monk who came from Tibet. At present his 4th generation is taking care of the monastery.

Orientation

Bara Mangwa busty is about 12 Km from Teesta Bazar and comes under the Takdah Block. The area is well known for oranges in particular and tomato, potato and other vegetables  which are organically grown here.

The homestay here is a century old house of the Moktans who were one of the first people to start living in the area. The hospitality of the Moktans and their love for their heritage and history makes this place unique.

The Property

Humro Home Bara Mungwa was started two years ago. It is nestled just below a viewpoint to which you can walk for a panoramic scene - it is a 15 minute walk up a gentle slope. The homestay is a two storied stone and concrete building. The place is encircled by farmland and has a good view of the surrounding area.

Resort Amenities

There is a small lawn in front where you can sit and enjoy the view over a cup of tea. It also acts as a play area for children.

Food

Regular mountain meal which includes, rice, Vegetables and lentil soup is served for lunch and dinner.

Chapati, Puri, and Paratha with vegetables is served in breakfast.

The exterior/interior

Location

Bara Mungwa offers a scenic view of the Kanchenjunga mountain range and the majestic river Teesta flowing along the valley.

It is well known surrounded by orange orchards. Cardamom and turmeric are also popularly grown here. Another household commodity which we find in Bara Mungwa is the broom.

Getting There

Teesta Bazar, which is on the NH 10 route connecting Gangtok and Kalimpong with Siliguri, our property is located about 12 kms and the drive is 1 hour uphill drive.

Another road accessibility is from Takdah. From Takdah the road via Teenchuley continues downhill. Road condition is fairly good at present and takes about 30 to 45 minutes to reach.
