Mr. Titus Lepcha

Sittong

Titus Lepcha is a local villager and social worker who belongs to the Lepcha community. At one time, his livelihood was from growing vegetables and oranges and cardamom. He also had a small dairy business. About a decade back, he started this homestay as additional business, but now this is his main source of income as he is completely immersed in the tourism process now.

His wife Sandhya assists him in the day to day running of the homestay. She also writes books as a hobby - in fact, her work has been published in Nepali language as well. Titus is very amiable in nature and is well known in the area as a friendly and helpful person.

Activity

Sittong is an ideal getaway for those who want to immerse themselves in the tranquility and peace of nature. The best way to enjoy the surroundings is to explore them - walk to Jogighat, a popular picnic spot for the locals. Find your way to the river and revel in the surrounding forests and the rocky riverbed. You can even spend some time fishing here.

A morning or evening walk through the village will bring you in close interaction with the birds and the local people. You can spot typical Lepcha style houses which are indigenous to the region. Birding is also a popular activity in the village.

Things to See

Ahal Dara sunrise viewpoint is about 6 km away from our homestay. Namthing pokhri is on the way, which is famous for salamander. There is also an ancient Lepcha Gumpha en route, which is about 100 years old. You can drive down to Mongpu about 7 km away, to see the famous cactus garden and Rabindranath Tagore's Smriti Bhavan. You will get to see cinchona plantations on the way.

Paanch Pokhri trek is a mild trek of about 45 minutes and takes you through a tea garden. When you reach the top, you will get a 360-degree view, with Kanchanjungha range stretching across the North and East, Balason and Mahananda rivers meandering towards the South and Mahananda wildlife sanctuary on the West.

Weather

Sittong weather varies widely according to the altitude. In the upper ridges of the hill, it is cooler...

Orientation

Sittong is a calm and peaceful village in Kurseong sub-division of Darjeeling district. It is also popular as one of the destinations from which you visit Mangpu, the hill station made famous by Poet Tagore. Mangpu does not have many tourist accommodations of its own and our Sittong Humro Home is about 8 km from Mangpu, making it an ideal base for visiting there.

Sittong is also famous for its orange orchards which are in full bloom during the months of November, December and January. Sittong grows some of the best oranges in the country. If you want a peaceful break away from your daily routine, spending time with family amongst nature's bounty, come to this quaint little village and you will not be disappointed.

Getting There

There are multiple routes to reach here depending on where you are coming from. If you are traveling through Sikkim Bengal connector NH10, you can go for Sittong through one of the three uphill roads starting at Kalijhora, Birik Dara or 27th Mile. The 1st road will reach Sittong via Latpanchar, the second one via Selphu and the third road through Mangpu.

One of the simplest ways to travel here is to come to Mangpu. Go to Nalidara in Mangpu which is the main taxi stand here. Take the southbound downhill road and reach Jogighat bridge over river Riyang about 6 km away. Half a km after crossing Jogighat on your right is Humro Home Chhayalom Kyong Sittong. If you are coming from Kurseong or Darjeeling side, you may travel to Bagora and then onwards to Mana which is the highest point of Sittong village. From Mana, our Homestay is 8 km downhill drive.
